Kalil Grant – Additional research into subway plant life

Since being awarded the Kalil Endowment for Smart Design Team Grant with Zane Murray and Jane Lien, we’ve begun our 2nd round of research and investigation into ways plant life is used in subway systems. I spent my spring break visiting my wife’s family in Taipei, Taiwan, so I used the opportunity to see what was done there.

Here are a series of photos I took while taking walks and subway rides around Taipei. Some of these photos were taken outside, but it does shed light on methods of incorporating plant life in heavily landscaped environments that need security measures taken into consideration.

The cultural concerns that exist in New York City subways are different than those of Taipei, so that needs to be kept in mind when viewing these photos. What I found most valuable were the different ways existing structures and landscapes were used to include plant life.
