Max MSP Midterm – Step Sequencer

For my Max MSP midterm, I put together a step sequencer. Making use of the “Global Transport” extra, I set up the ability for users to open samples at any point during the sound creation process. Here is a screen shot of the interface:

Here is a video demonstration of the Step Sequencer patch:

I happened to have rehearsal on Tuesday after showing the Sequencer in class, so I plugged the laptop in and put it to use. Here is an audio sample of one of the songs we did with it:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Midterm Proposal

My intention is to create a percussive and rhythm-based instrument that can be used in a live sound performance. The instrument will use midi and color tracking as inputs and make use of samples that have been prerecorded or recorded during the performance. A key aspect of this instrument will be an abstract Max visualization mapping particular data gathered throughout the performance.

This will be a continuation of several prototypes I have made using Max MSP. Up to this point, I have done several prototypes making use of midi input to control sound, 1 prototype using color tracking to create sound, and 1 prototype using color tracking to draw.

This is an early prototype of sound creation using of the color tracking:

This is a prototype illustrating the use of midi control:

Here are two videos illustrating the prototype that makes use of color tracking to draw in Max:
